Aegis Space Law Partner Bailey Reichelt was recently quoted in Communications Daily discussing the U.S. Department of Commerce’s proposed framework for authorizing novel space missions.

The proposal introduces a new certification process intended to streamline approval for emerging space activities, such as in-space servicing and manufacturing. While the framework aims to reduce regulatory friction, questions remain about how it will function in practice.

Bailey noted that, for now, uncertainty remains around the new approach and its implementation:

“For now, [we are] advising clients to stick with traditional licensing regimes,” citing open questions about how the Commerce Department’s process would handle mission changes and other operational considerations.

Her comments highlight the importance of regulatory clarity as commercial space activities continue to evolve.
